Interior Ministry official at the center or prison corruption

HAVANA, Cuba, October (Roberto Santana Rodríguez / www.cubanet.org ) -

The director of the Valle Grande prison on the outskirts of Havana, Interior Ministry Major Juan Guevara Toledano, is at the center of corruption at the facility, making sure inmates are charged, in dollars, for privileges such as access to phone calls and beds.

The facility's wards, with a capacity of 123 inmates, currently house more than 200 inmates, forcing many to bunk on the floor. Reports also cite decomposing food and poor quality drinking water.

Guevara Toledano takes no interest in prison conditions, allowing inmates to go without medical attention, diverting medicines for personal purposes, and allowing guards to abuse prisoners.

Guevara, according to reports, does make sure "services" such as access to phones (one dollar, U.S. is the going rate) bedding (20 dollars) marital privileges ((25 dollars) are charged for.
