The Mas Family Scholarships

This document provides basic information that will help you determine if you are a likely candidate for a Mas Family Scholarship Award. It also informs you about the application process that you must follow once you have established that you are indeed a likely candidate.

Types of  Scholarship Awards. Graduate and undergraduate scholarships are available ONLY in the fields of Engineering, Business, International Relations, Economics, Communications and Journalism.

Selection Process. Awards are based on the recipient’s academic performance, leadership qualities, potential to contribute to the advancement of a free society, and likelihood of succeeding in ones chosen.

Each applicant will be evaluated through a two-steps selection process; a preliminary screening committee will review and confirm the student’s credentials (academics standing, grades, financial need, etc.) and will select a pool of finalists. A selection committee will make the final determination based on the ranking of the students and two short essays that the candidate must write and two character evaluations. The selection committee may wish to interview the finalist by telephone or in person.

Amount of Award: The amount of the award will depend on the cost of tuition at the recipient’s selected institution, on his or her family’s financial situation, as well as the amount of funds received from the recipient from other sources. Full scholarships cannot be awarded to students who will be receiving full tuition scholarships and and/or stipendiary support from other sources, although such student are still eligible to reapply in subsequent years. Those who have already received awards and have maintained a high level of performance will receive new awards until the maximum of US $ 40,000 is spend or the studies are completed. Amount of yearly award cannot exceed more than US $ 10,000.

Who May Apply: Any financially needy, top of the class, Cuban American student who is direct descendant of those who left Cuba or were born in Cuba themselves. “ Needy” will be defined by using a federal formula that examines a family’s financial situation in terms of how much a family can contribute to its child’s education. The formula deducts from the total financial need. “Top of the class” is defined as a student at the top ten percent of his or her high school class and having at least one parent or two grandparents born in Cuba. All qualified candidates will be considered regardless of  gender, race, color, religion, or disability.
