Cuban blogger released from prison

HAVANA, May 15 (UPI) -- A prominent Cuban human-rights activist says she hopes a court ruling freeing her from prison is a sign that repression in Cuba is on the wane.

Dania Garcia left the high-security Mano Negro prison this week after a court commuted her 20-month sentence for domestic violence to a 300-peso ($14) fine, the BBC reported Saturday.

"I feel that one more time, we will overcome," Garcia told reporters. "Once again, we the Cuban opposition, the human rights, we're winning and we will continue to win."

Garcia, 41, writes a blog on U.S.-based opposition Web sites. She was arrested amid a crackdown on the Ladies in White, a Cuban group that staged weekly marches in Havana in support of political prisoners.

The BBC said the most recent charge stemmed from a reported row last month between Garcia and her 23-year-old daughter who reportedly disapproves of her political activism.
