CUBAN AMERICAN NATIONAL FOUNDATION,

ASSOCIATION OF CUBAN ENGINEERS,

AND CUBAN-AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS SPONSOR INFRASTRUCTURE SEMINAR FOR CUBA

The Cuban American National Foundation (CANF), the Association of Cuban Engineers, and the Cuban-American Association of Civil Engineers will host a seminar entitled "Infrastructure Assessment for a Transition in Cuba" this evening Thursday, May 5, at 7:00 PM at the University of Miami's Casa Bacardi. The seminar will highlight the results of a new comprehensive study of the present state of Cuba's infrastructure, including architecture and urban planning, transportation, water and wastewater management, energy power, telecommunications, and healthcare. The study was published by the Endowment for Cuban American Studies of the Jorge Mas Canosa Freedom Foundation.

The "Infrastructure Assessment for a Transition in Cuba" study represents an update to a similar effort undertaken by the Cuban American National Foundation in October of 1992, published at that time as "The Cuban Economy: Blueprint for Reconstruction."

The current update was headed by Manuel Cereijo, former Professor at the College of Engineering and Design at Florida International University, and Helena Solo-Gabriele, Professor of Environmental Engineering and Associate Dean of Research at the University of Miami. "Cuba is at a critical juncture and we believe this is a very appropriate time to release a study such as this that looks toward a future of freedom and democracy. These engineers are looking out for the welfare of the Cuban people, something the present regime has neglected to do for a half century," declared Francisco J. Hernandez, CANF President.

The seminar will feature brief oral presentations in each of the technical areas followed by a question and answer period with the panelists. "We have put together some of the most talented specialists in their respective fields of expertise to ensure a quality study that will be of practical use to a future government in Cuba that is willing to take the path of true democratic change," said Cereijo.

Casa Bacardi is located on the University of Miami campus at 1531 Brescia Avenue in Coral Gables.
